In a post-COVID world of layoffs, recession and remote work, the incentive is stronger than ever to leave the stagnated conditions of the Bay Area in favor of up-and-coming tech hubs like Los Angeles, New York and Austin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more daring <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/en\/blog\/entrepreneurship-program\/digital-nomads-an-entrepreneur-journey\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">digital nomads<\/a> are heading off to exotic global destinations that satisfy their thirst for adventure, even while furthering their careers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, some tech employees simply want to be home with friends and family rather than forced to move to Silicon Valley. The trend toward remote work has thrown wide the doors to either scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Draw of Silicon Valley<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For almost a century, Silicon Valley has been a shining beacon of <a href=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/en\/blog\/investors\/navigating-the-innovation-landscape-open-innovation-vs-closed-innovation-in-startup-investments\/\">innovation<\/a> of and entrepreneurial promise. A region with a concentration of elite educational institutions and flush with cash, it has drawn the bright and ambitious to come and create. One key characteristic of Silicon Valley and possibly it&#8217;s most underrated, is it&#8217;s high tolerance for failure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIn other places, a failed venture can become this badge of shame that shadows you your entire life,\u201d says Russell Hancock of Joint Venture Silicon Valley. \u201cThat\u2019s just not the case here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, entrepreneurs succeed, fail, and succeed again. The environment is highly favorable for innovators to take risks with some level of security. However, somewhere along the way the region became saturated with some less desirable qualities pushing people away from it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Goodbye Bay Area, Hello Los Angeles<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Even before COVID, many in the industry noted that Silicon Valley was starting to collapse in on itself\u2014a victim of its own dazzling success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Astronomical living costs resulted in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2017\/04\/22\/in-costly-bay-area-even-six-figure-salaries-are-considered-low-income\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><em>Mercury News<\/em> headline<\/a>, <em>\u201cIn Costly Bay Area, Even Six-Figure Salaries are Considered \u2018Low Income.\u2019\u201d<\/em> Operating costs have skyrocketed at a similar rate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Problems such as market saturation and insular thinking that stifles innovation have become apparent. Folks are fleeing, and if you\u2019ve been reading our newsletters you know that the number-one outbound destination is San Francisco\u2019s sunny sister to the south: Los Angeles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Relocation expert Ryan Carrigan of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.movebuddha.com\/blog\/sf-outbound-surge-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">moveBuddha<\/a> found that 90% of moving searches involving the San Francisco Bay Area were done by people looking to leave. Of those, 15% were headed to Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/los-angeles-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"6105\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/los-angeles-scaled.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/en\/?attachment_id=6105\" class=\"wp-image-6105\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/los-angeles-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/los-angeles-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/los-angeles-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/los-angeles-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/los-angeles-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/los-angeles-280x187.jpg 280w, https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/los-angeles-1170x780.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size has-very-dark-gray-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color\"><strong>In 2018, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcg.com\/en-us\/publications\/2018\/stars-aligning-southern-california-next-great-tech-ecoysystem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Boston Consulting Group<\/a> teamed up with the Alliance for Southern California Innovation to determine SoCal\u2019s potential as \u201cthe next major global tech ecosystem.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They saw all the right ingredients: human capital, financial capital, a thriving university system, strong corporate environment, adequate infrastructure, and a culture conducive to innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>We found a growing, surprisingly potent and robust region on the cusp of greater things<\/em>,\u201d wrote BCG in their <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bcg.com\/publications\/2018\/stars-aligning-southern-california-next-great-tech-ecoysystem\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">study<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cEspecially encouraging is the strength of the area\u2019s eight entrepreneurial hubs, or nodes, which provide a firm base on which to build &#8230; If educators, executives, investors, government officials, and other stakeholders can muster the will and vision to work together, they can tap a multibillion-dollar opportunity.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>At M <a href=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/en\/blog\/startups\/how-to-choose-the-ideal-online-accelerator-or-startup-program-in-the-usa\/\">Accelerator<\/a>, we didn&#8217;t need to mine stats to discover the trend. Both are theoretically possible. <strong>But is it really that simple?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cMany cities fail to attract <a href=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/en\/blog\/go-to-market\/programmatic-advertising-the-secret-weapon-your-startup-isnt-using-but-should-be\/\">startup<\/a> communities because governments, large corporations and universities don&#8217;t effectively collaborate with entrepreneurs\u2014or with each other,\u201d <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>write early-stage investors Brad Feld and Ian Hathaway in their recent book <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" href=\"https:\/\/startupcw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><em>The Startup Community Way<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cAll too often, these players control activity or impose their plans from the top-down, rather than supporting an experimental environment that is led from the bottom-up.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Feld, based in Boulder, CO, is co-founder of the Foundry Group and has been an early stage investor and entrepreneur since 1987. He co-founded Mobius <a href=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/en\/blog\/investors\/stages-of-business-funding-comparing-private-equity-venture-capital-and-seed-investors\/\">Venture Capital<\/a>, Techstars and Intensity Ventures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hathaway, based in Santa Barbara, CA, is an analyst, strategic advisor, writer, and entrepreneur interested in startups and their impact. He helps organizations solve complex problems, produce <a href=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/en\/blog\/venture-capital\/want-to-be-a-data-driven-vc-heres-how-to-leverage-llms\/\">data-driven<\/a> insights, and develop new products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their book, Feld and Hathaway combine a wealth of experience to construct a framework for startup success beyond the boomtimes, which relies on a system of conducive factors present within a community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To mitigate the seeming risks of leaving the Silicon cradle, one San Jose startup is offering a $10K incentive for tech workers to relocate. Three former Google employees created <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mainstreet.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">MainStreet<\/a> to help companies hire remote workers in places like Sacramento and Salt Lake City. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They provide video-conference training, as well as a brick-and-mortar coworking space to combat the isolation that can often cause <a href=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/en\/blog\/freelance\/the-shift-to-freelancing-how-the-gig-economy-is-taking-over\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">remote workers to quit<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With more and more people growing tired of Bay Area bummers like traffic snarls and long lines for your coffee, the MainStreet <a href=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/en\/blog\/investors\/unveiling-the-business-model-matrix-for-assessing-startup-success\/\">business model<\/a> seems sound.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:53px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Digital Nomads Go Global<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>adventurous<\/strong> sorts who aren\u2019t particularly tied to the domestic scene, the pull to try life in new colors and flavors has never been so irresistible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Low cost of living, balmy climes and exciting experiences are some of the perks of going abroad. <strong>But what are the downsides? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/digital-nomads-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6111\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/digital-nomads-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/digital-nomads-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/digital-nomads-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/digital-nomads-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/digital-nomads-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/digital-nomads-280x187.jpg 280w, https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/digital-nomads-1170x780.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We asked several startup <a href=\"https:\/\/maccelerator.la\/en\/blog\/startups\/your-essential-guide-to-leading-startup-accelerators-and-incubators\/\">founders<\/a> about where they live, advantages they have there, and challenges they face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cI live in <strong>Brasilia<\/strong>, the capital of Brazil, and work out of a coworking space,<\/em>\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>says Brian Davis, cofounder of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" href=\"https:\/\/sparkrental.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">SparkRental<\/a>, a company that helps middle-class Americans build rental income as a path to financial independence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cLiving abroad, my family and I have far lower living expenses than we did in our high-tax, high-cost-of-living home state of Maryland. <\/em><br><br><em>We enjoy free housing through my wife&#8217;s employer, excellent health insurance with full coverage, and we don&#8217;t even have a car because our neighborhood and city are so walkable and bikeable.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Davis credits his low living expenses with enabling him to get through the initial phase of his business, when he was feeding time and money into it while receiving little back in the way of returns and profits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His co-founder, Deni Supplee (who lives outside Philadelphia), similarly structured her life to have extremely low living expenses so that they were able to survive until profitability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They both worked side gigs to earn extra income throughout those early days, which further extended their runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cToday, my greatest personal expense is food, followed by entertainment and travel,<\/em>\u201d explains Davis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cMy wife and I have a savings rate of 50-60% of our income, funneling the majority of our income into investments. And, of course, back into growing SparkRental.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other side of the world, Jack Choros, founder of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" href=\"https:\/\/ironmonk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">IronMonk<\/a>, has fallen in love with <strong>Thailand<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His&nbsp;multi-faceted agency provides a wide range of online marketing and content production services for clients worldwide, but its inception took place in New York City. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choros later moved to <strong>Chang Mai<\/strong>, where he enjoys the low cost of living, a beautiful co-working space, and the allure of Thai culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOne thing I\u2019ve underestimated is how great the tech startup scene is here,\u201d <\/em>says Choros. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAdmittedly, most North American entrepreneurs living here are doing so to bootstrap their business. They are not necessarily venture capital funded with millions of dollars of runway, but they are ex-patriots, which means I can still do business with people who relate to North American culture and the North American way of doing business.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Having said that, Choros also appreciates the influence local culture has had on him and the way he does business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019ve met many great Thai entrepreneurs as I learn to speak the language,\u201d <\/em>he says, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cand I\u2019ve incorporated them into my business as well. I love the fact that I made this decision.
