From Homelessness to Founding Backstage Capital – Arlan Hamilton’s Inspiring Journey

When Arlan Hamilton set out to launch what would become Backstage Capital, she had no idea it would become the venture capital firm it is today. Arlan’s inspiring journey from homelessness to success has made her a true inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere. In this blog post, we’ll tell Arlan’s incredible story and explore how it has impacted the venture capital industry.

Who is Arlan Hamilton?

Arlan Hamilton is the founder of Backstage Capital, an early-stage venture capital firm that invests in underrepresented founders. Arlan is a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion within the tech industry. She was born in California, and her mother was a single parent. She attended college but dropped out to pursue a career in music.

At the age of 25, Arlan was homeless and living out of a car in Los Angeles. She had very little money and no support system. Despite her difficult circumstances, Arlan refused to give up on her dreams. She used her experience to fuel her ambition and determination to succeed.

Early Life and Struggles

Arlan was born in California to a single parent and grew up in a low-income household. She felt like an outsider in school and was often bullied for being different. Despite the challenges she faced, Arlan was determined to make something of herself.

At the age of 17, Arlan moved to Nashville to pursue a career in music. She worked hard, but her efforts didn’t pay off. She ended up homeless and unable to find steady work. Despite her struggles, Arlan refused to give up. She knew that there had to be a way to make her dreams come true.

From Homelessness to the Launch of Backstage Capital

After two years of homelessness, Arlan’s luck changed when she was offered a job at a tech startup. She worked her way up, eventually becoming a manager at the company. While there, she was exposed to the venture capital world, and it sparked an idea in her.

Arlan realized that there weren’t many venture capital firms that catered to underrepresented founders. She decided to launch her own firm, which she called Backstage Capital. She quit her job and moved to San Francisco to start the firm.

How Hamilton Built Backstage Capital

Arlan had a vision for Backstage Capital, but she had no money or connections. She worked hard to raise capital for the firm, cold-calling potential investors and attending networking events. She also worked with tech incubators and accelerators to find promising startups.

Arlan eventually secured enough funding to launch Backstage Capital. She quickly made a name for herself as an advocate for underrepresented founders. Her passion and dedication to the cause caught the attention of investors, and she was soon able to raise even more money for the firm.

Hamilton’s Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Arlan has become an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere. She often speaks at universities and conferences, sharing her story and offering advice to those who want to follow in her footsteps.

Arlan’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: take risks, be persistent, and never give up. She believes that if you believe in yourself and keep pushing forward, you can achieve anything.

Impact on the Venture Capital Industry

Arlan’s success has inspired many other venture capital firms to focus on investing in underrepresented founders. Backstage Capital has invested in over 200 startups, and Arlan has become a role model for other venture capitalists.

The venture capital industry is slowly becoming more diverse, and Arlan is one of the main reasons for this shift. She has broken down barriers and opened up opportunities for underrepresented founders.

In 2017, she was included in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. She has also received numerous awards from organizations such as the National Venture Capital Association and the Anita Borg Institute.

Arlan has also written several books about her journey and her experiences in the venture capital world. Her books have become bestsellers, and she has become a sought-after speaker at conferences and universities.
