Empowerment at Work: Active Job Seekers and Those Likely to Stay with Their Employers

The work environment has changed dramatically over the last few years, and both employers and employees have had to adapt to a new reality. A study from Randstad highlights some of the critical changes that have taken place. The most notable finding is that more than ever employees are likely to actively seek new opportunities than stay with their current employer.

A Workmonitor report from Randstad that initially launched in 2003 surveyed over 88,000 employees in 33 countries, including the United States, found that 41 percent of employees would quit a job if it didn’t fit with their personal life. That said, it was also reported that 60 percent of participants are likely to stay with their current employer. Additionally, 76 percent of employees said they were interested in training and development opportunities.

This study also found that employees are motivated by four key factors:

  1. Career advancement opportunities (25% globally)
  2. Enhanced benefits (29% globally)
  3. Increased flexibility of working hours (31% globally)
  4. Increased flexibility in terms of working location (34% globally)

When it comes to workplace flexibility, the findings in the report were significant. For example, it was reported that 41 percent of employees wouldn’t accept a job if it didn’t provide flexibility around work location, and 43 percent said they wouldn’t accept a job if it didn’t offer flexibility around their working hours. Whereas 25 percent of respondents said, they had quit a job because it didn’t provide enough flexibility. 

This can be qualitatively summed up as follows: Employees want more control over their work lives and are increasingly willing to make job changes to get it. In a world where work-life balance is more important than ever, employers must be aware of this trend and adjust their policies and practices accordingly.

Randstad’s report provides valuable insights for employers who want to stay ahead of the curve and keep their employees engaged and motivated. By offering more flexible working arrangements and opportunities for career advancement, employers can create a work environment that meets the needs of today’s workers. Also, investing in training and development programs will help employees gain the skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing workplace.

By understanding the trends highlighted in Randstad’s report, employers can make changes that will lead to a more engaged and productive workforce. In turn, this will help them stay competitive in today’s economy.

It was reported by the World Health Organization post covid in March of 2021, that anxiety and depression had increased 25 percent worldwide. This was so significant that a large majority of those feeling affected decided to take “career breaks” due to the stress. Therefore, encouraging your employees to have open communication with you could prevent them from falling victim to these statistics by making them feel heard and their feelings nurtured. 

Here are a few ways you can encourage open communication:

· Hold regular team meetings. This gives everyone a chance to voice their opinion and share their ideas.

· Encourage feedback. This could mean soliciting feedback regularly or setting up an anonymous feedback system.

· Be transparent. This means sharing information about the company’s finances, strategy, and decision-making process.

· Promote a healthy work-life balance. This means not expecting employees to work late nights or weekends unless it’s necessary.
